April is going out in style as the last full week of the month brings the perfect chance to explore throughout our city by the sea. 

Get your outdoors fix as Gateway to Spring continues at Bristol's Blithewold Mansion with more than 50,000 daffodils in bloom. Can't get enough of the sunshine? Head to Chepstow on Tuesday for a tree tour on the historic grounds of one of Newport's famous mansions. 

The Newport Craft Beer Festival returns on Friday for two days of taste-testing, live music and local flavors from area breweries and restaurants. The festival features carefully crafted brews from 35 of the nation’s top breweries with more than 200 beers, including local favorites like Newport Storm Brewery.

BLITHEWOLD: GATEWAY TO SPRING

Details: Each April, Blithewold opens its gates to welcome visitors as springtime begins. The season unfurls with our well-known daffodil display, covering this 33-acre seaside estate with over 50,000 daffodils that delight visitors for nearly a month.

 

SCHOOL OF FISH

Details: At Eating with the Ecosystem’s “School of Fish”, Rhode Island chefs will educate you on different methods for turning a whole fish - straight from the sea - into a marvelous dinner you can share with your family and friends. Learn how to use plentiful local species like scup, herring, whiting, skate, squid, dogfish, whole sea scallops, and sea robin. Held in the demo kitchen (a former school classroom) at Hope & Main, each workshop is also a dinner, complete with wine and good company! Each workshop will feature one fish species, prepared several ways. Come for just one class or attend them all!

Details: Although she began her career in ceramics, Kate Blacklock has explored a variety of media throughout her career. From oil paintings to photographs or scans printed on aluminum to 3-D-printed ceramics, this exhibition showcases several of the artist’s ongoing series.

Threading these series together is the artist’s keen and enduring interest in joining the present and past. Seamlessly integrating new technologies with older art historical traditions, such as Chinese landscape painting and nineteenth-century European porcelain, Blacklock creates something altogether new and contemporary. Whether it is examining aspects of nature or everyday objects, Blacklock carries the viewer to a place where realism, abstraction, and illusion all become one. Based in Providence, Kate Blacklock has exhibited her work in group and solo exhibitions around the country. She received her MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence where she now teaches.

 

 

FASHION AND SATIRE: THE DRAWINGS OF ORSON BYRON LOWELL AND CHARLES DANA GIBSON

Details: A new loan exhibition opens in the second floor gallery at Rosecliff on Saturday, January 28, 2017.  Fashion and Satire: The Drawings of Orson Byron Lowell and Charles Dana Gibson pairs a collection of satirical illustrations with Gilded Age fashion pieces and accessories. Focusing on the life of “high society” in New York City, the illustrations invite the viewer to understand fashion as a vehicle for representing and interpreting societal ideals in the Gilded Age.

THE EDEN OF AMERICA: NEWPORT'S LANDSCAPES THROUGH THE AGES

Details: Join award-winning architectural historian John Tschirch as we stroll through four centuries of landscape design and horticulture in one of America’s most historic cities. The preservation of heritage sites of international significance is of foremost interest to Mr. Tschirch. He has lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad on architecture, landscapes and historic cities, from the Attingham Conference in London (2012) to Yale University’s Mellon Center Seminar on 18th Century French Design (2000) and the UNESCO sponsored conference on Architecture and Culture in Buenos Airies (1999).

 

LECTURE: BEYOND GILDED: ALVA VANDERBILT AND HER AGE
