Tucked away in scenic Portsmouth lies Green Animals Topiary Garden, the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States, boasting intricate topiaries, vibrant florals and and an array of fruit and vegetable gardens. This small country estate was initially purchased in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton, Treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in Fall River, MA. It consisted of seven acres of land, a white clapboard summer residence, farm outbuildings, a pasture and a vegetable garden.
Today, there are more than 80 pieces of topiary throughout the gardens, from an array of animals to geometric figures and ornamental designs, all sculpted from California privet, yew, and English boxwood. The manicured grounds also include more than 35 flowerbeds, geometric pathways, a rose arbor, a grape arbor, fruit trees and more.
