It's no surprise that our City by the Sea is steeped in history. From the oldest tavern, operating library and synagogue in the country, to grandiose Gilded Age Mansions and the largest collection of Colonial Era homes in New England, our roots are firmly planted. But did you know that the city has been infused with a substantial amount of Irish heritage since the early 1800's? During that time, Irish immigrants began moving to Newport in large numbers to embrace a variety of jobs, from working the coal mines in nearby Portsmouth to building Fort Adams State Park here in Newport. Today, the city celebrates this heritage with a month-long roster of events, including the Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade which will celebrate its 61st anniversary this Saturday, March 11, 2017.
Newport’s first parade took place in 1956. Today, thousands of spectators line the streets of downtown every Saturday preceding St. Patrick’s Day to enjoy the two-hour parade featuring pipe and marching bands, fife and drum corps, reenactment units, and a host of local, state, and regional organizations including police and fire units, social/fraternal organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Schools, and non-profits. This Saturday, the 61st Annual Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 11:00 AM from Newport City Hall and will proceed down Thames Street to Carroll Avenue at Saint Augustin’s Church in the heart of the Fifth Ward.
Named one of the best St. Patrick’s Day Parades and Celebrations in New England by USA Today and Yankee Magazine, the parade encompasses endless seas of participants and spectators dressed in their finest greenery ready to celebrate the Irish culture.
The parade will be followed by a St. Patrick's Day family fun celebration at the Martin Recreation Center at 35 Golden Hill Street from 1:00 - 4:00 PM wirh Irish bands and dancers, Tony the Dancing Cop, pirates, face painting and a "How Green Am I" contest with cash prizes. Admission is free.
