The first object a visitor notices as he enters Newport by ferry is the majestic spire of Trinity Church. Although designed in 1726, the spire was not put up until much later. It is one of the few built before 1740 still in extant. The church building itself is the second Trinity Church; the first, having proven too small, was given to another congregation. Designed by Richard Munday, Newport's first famed architect-builder, this has been the church most favored by society, past and present. - Newport Pleasures and Palaces
