Jane Pickens Theater, the historic single-screen Greek-revival theater in downtown Newport, will introduce The JPT Comedy Series next month in partnership with John Tobin Presents. The monthly series will hit the big stage with a lineup of big names in comedy, from Tony V, "The Funniest Person in Massachusetts," to Rhode Island native Ace Aceto.

Thursday, April 28: Tony V, Sean Sullivan, Al Park | 8:00pm 

Tony V started his stand-up comedy career in 1982 after attending several shows at Boston’s prestigious Comedy Connection. His street wise humor tempered with a genuine feel for the human condition quickly propelled him to headliner status on the national comedy club circuit. In 1986 he was named “Funniest Person in Massachusetts” by Showtime television. and followed this achievement with several performances on HBO, the Arts and Entertainment Network, Comedy Central and MTV. Tony’s big screen outings include State and Main, Celtic Pride, Housesitter, One Crazy Summer and Shakes the Clown as well as the independently produced By the Sea and Abracadabra. 

 

A semi-finalist in the 2008 and 2009 Boston Comedy Festival, Sean Sullivan has emerged as one of the top young comics in the country. He’s showcased for the producers of Late Night with David Letterman and the Just For Laughs comedy festival and is a favorite at colleges all over New England.

 

In just the past year, Al Park has won both the Boston Comedy Festival and the Cleveland Comedy Festival, and was a finalist in the prestigious Seattle International Comedy Competition. He has also been a featured performer at the Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival and North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival.


Thursday, May 19: Christine Hurly Ace Aceto, Mike Whitman | 8:30pm

 

Like any great comedian, Christine Hurley has an innate ability to see humor in "everyday" situations. She has quickly become a favorite in the Boston comedy world. She works with, and is respected by Boston's comedic legends. Among them being; Don Gavin, Lenny Clarke, Steve Sweeney, Paul D'Angelo, Paul Nardizzi, Patty Ross, Tony V, Loretta Laroche,…and her biggest fan and mentor Johnny Pizzi.

 

Ace Aceto burst onto the comedy scene during the latter part of the stand-up comedy boom in 1989. His first time on stage he immediately caught attention by placing second in a local comedy contest. By 1990, Ace was chosen along with 9 other finalists to be filmed for Stand-Up Stand-Up and Short Attention Span Theater for Comedy Central. Ace Aceto has worked with such comic luminaries as Jeff Dunham, Jim Breuer, Jim Gaffigan, Brian Regan, Kevin Meany, Jon Stewart, Dom Irerra, and Lewis Black (just to name a few). Ace has also opened for such acts as Huey Lewis & The News, Luther Vandross, and Herb Reed & The Platters.

 

Named Boston's Best New Comedian, Mike Whitman has performed at colleges and top venues around the country. 


Thursday, June 16: Jimmy Dunn | 8:00pm 

 

Jimmy Dunn is an actor and stand-up comedian from Boston, who recently co-starred on the CBS comedy "The McCarthys" as Sean McCarthy.
