Each March Bike Newport throws a bike party to celebrate cycling in Newport and raise funds for a new initiatives. This year's event takes place on Thursday, March 16, 6:00 - 9:00 PM at Midtown Oyster Bar. Enjoy live music by the Slackwater String Band and Los Duderinos, supported by Common Fence Music. The grand prize raffle winner will take home a Cannondale Quick 6 hybrid, donated by Newport Bicycle.

Funds raised at past Bike Newport Nights have supported bike educator training, bike rider safety education, the distribution of night safety equipment, the purchase of high-capacity event bike racks, and the advocacy to achieve a much-needed, off-road bike path in Newport.

This year’s event will raise funds for community bike projects, helping to restore and distribute hundreds of collected bicycles citywide. Bicycles are donated and collected year-round from recycling days, basement cleanups, abandonment, and more. Community participants and volunteers work to restore the bikes using shared tools, know-how, and parts at the Bike Newport Bike Garage. After a busy summer at a fantastic but temporary location on Spring Street, the Bike Garage is now in full swing at the organization’s new HQ directly opposite City Hall. With a full basement dedicated to an ever-changing inventory of recovered bicycles, Bike Newport staff and volunteers are working with individuals and agencies citywide to get these bikes back on the road, and people back in the saddle.

The party is generously hosted by Midtown Oyster Bar with help from Common Fence Music and entertainment by the Slackwater String Band and Los Duderinos. Back by popular demand is Velosprints - where party-goers get to hop on bikes and try to beat their friends in a 30-second sprint to the finish. Projected times and audience cheers amp up the excitement while the bands play on. Thanks the RI Bicycle Coalition for providing the equipment.

Dozens of area businesses provide raffle and silent auction items packaged up into bountiful baskets to help raise the needed funds. Everyone in attendance is eligible for the Grand Prize Giveaway - a beautiful new bicycle donated by Ten Speed Spokes.

Admission is $30 and tickets can be purchased in advance at www.bikenewportri.org
