As you most likely suspect, we're big on boating in the City by the Sea. With a variety of sailing cruises, boating charters and no shortage of sea, our time spent out on the water is bountiful. So you can imagine when we came across the North American Safe Boating Campaign, we were on board (see what we did there?) The campaign, known as Wear It!, is a yearlong effort in the U.S. and Canada focused on spreading the message of boating safety and the critical importance of always wearing a life jacket each and every time on the water.

This Friday, May 20, Newport celebrates Wear Your PFD (Personal Flotation Device) To Work Day, an annual awareness day to remind boating professionals and enthusiasts of the importance of wearing a life jacket while out on the water. The annual event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) serves as a fun, educational element to officially kick off National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27.

Don your favorite PFD and share your photos with #WearItNewport on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter.

Life Jacket Tips

The following life jacket tips, provided by NSBC, offer knowledge on selecting the right PFD for you.

Select the Right Style

Life jackets are designed for a boater’s recreational water activity. A life jacket may be inherently buoyant – using foam or other buoyant materials to stay afloat – or inflatable – providing buoyancy when inflated by relying on CO2 cylinders.

Be sure each life jacket is U.S. Coast Guard-approved and appropriate for the water activity by checking the label printed on the inside of the life jacket.

Make Sure It Fits

You don’t want your life jacket too large or too small. A snug fit is a proper fit. Remember, life jackets for adults do not work for children.

  1. Make sure the life jacket is properly fastened.
  2. All straps, buckles or zippers are secure.
  3. Hold your arms straight up over your head.
  4. Ask a friend to grasp the tops of the arm openings and gently pull up.

How to Care for Your Life Jacket

Refer to OWNER’S MANUAL for specific maintenance requirements.
