Brewers at Newport Storm Brewery recently collaborated with local coffee shop Empire Tea & Coffee to create a coffee stout brewing with local aromas and flavors. The crew started off with four types of coffee and two different base beers. After deliberation, they narrowed the coffee selection down to a Guatemalan coffee called Cosecha that is locally roasted at Newport's Empire Tea & Coffee. “CJ Barone, owner of Empire Tea & Coffee, has always supported RI craft breweries and Newport Storm especially with the Newport Craft Beer Festival.” says, Brew Master, Derek Luke, “It was a no-brainer to collaborate with his local roaster, Kat, who was so passionate about helping us select the right coffee for our beer.”
This smooth like silk stout, named High Test, is filled with aromas of coffee and sweet chocolate. The base of this beer was made with a combination of Black Patent, Chocolate Wheat, and Roasted Barley malts which add sweet and toasted flavors. Dark malts are added to create depth with roasted flavors while Magnum and Equinox hops balance out the finish and create a smooth, sweet finish. Subtle hints of caramel and nougat combine with coffee flavors from locally roasted, "dry-beaned" coffee beans that come into play during the aging process where the whole batch was fermented and allowed to mature.
High Test, which touts 8% ABV, will be available by the four-pack starting the week of February 20th. Coastal Extreme Brewing Company is Rhode Island’s Microbrewery, brewing Newport Storm beers since 1999. The Visitors Center is open daily year-round for tours and tastings (closed Tuesdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day) in the north end of Newport on JT Connell Road. Newport Storm beer is distributed throughout RI and PA. Their brews include four year-round beers: Hurricane Amber Ale, Rhode Island Blueberry, India Pale Ale, and Rhode Sodah, their Storm of the Season beers, and limited release beers like their Barrel AgedBeer Program and Annual Limited Release Series of bottle-conditioned beers. The beers are offered in a variety of packages ranging from kegs to bottles to cans.
In 2006 they began the Newport Distilling Company, becoming the first distillery in Rhode Island in 135 years. Newport Distilling Company started making Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum in 2006 and more recently started making Thomas Tew Widows Walk Overproof Rum and Sea Fog American Whiskey. Thomas Tew Single Barrel Rum is an authentic aged pot still rum. It is made in the same tradition as the rums in Newport when it was known as the rum capital of the world in the late 1800’s. The Distillery’s spirits are also available outside of Rhode Island and can be found in MA, CT, NY, NJ, DE, MI, MD, DC, SC, GA, FL, and IL.
