Known for his significant contributions to the fields of philosophy, mathematics, and economics, Berkeley was also a key figure in the eighteenth century history of Paradise Valley.

Details: “At the Point of the Cutlass: The Pirate Capture, Bold Escape, and Lonely Exile of Philip Ashton,” by Greg Flemming.

Hear the incredible true story of a nineteen year old fisherman, Philip Ashton, from colonial New England who was captured by pirates and then escaped and survived for two years on an uninhabited Caribbean island. In discussing his book, At the Point of a Cutlass, author Flemming will reveal the surprising connections between Atlantic piracy in the early 1700s and major New England seaports like Boston and Newport.

A Revolution in Color: The World of John Singleton Copley

Details: On Thursday November 3, 2016 at 5:30pm, the Newport Historical Society will host award-winning Harvard historian Jane Kamensky to explore the life of one of the greatest artists of the 18th century which is featured in her new biography A Revolution in Color: The World of John Singleton Copley. She will share details about his connections to Newport and other aspects about the American Revolution as seen through Copley’s eyes.

The Pennfield School's 25th Annual Cornucopia Professional Fine Arts and Crafts Sale

Where: The Pennfield School

Details: November 5- The Pennfield School will host its 25th Annual Cornucopia Professional Fine Arts and Crafts Sale on Saturday, November 5, 2016, from 9am - 4 pm. Over 60 professional artisans will display for sale their works of art including woodworking, jewelry, clothing, pottery, photography, home decor and other finely-made crafts. An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe

Details: The Portsmouth High School drama club will present the play An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe, written by Robert Mason, features dramatizations of several of Poe’s stories, some well-known (The Tell-Tale Heart), and some unfamiliar to most (The Systems of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether). Show dates are November 10th, 11th, and 12th, curtain opens at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10 for the general admission, and $5 for senior citizens and students. Tickets are available at the door.

Gordon S. Wood to Receive Redwood Medal

Details: Pulitzer prize-winning historian Gordon S. Wood will be honored by the Redwood Library on Thursday, November 10, 2016 as the second recipient of the Abraham Redwood Medal for Contributions to American History and Culture. The event will take place at 5:30 pm at the Casino Theatre, where Wood will give a talk titled, “Advice to the Egyptians (and other Arabs) from the Founding Fathers” following the presentation of the medal. The award, established in 2015 by the Redwood Board of Directors, recognizes individuals whose outstanding contributions to American culture mirror the founding spirit of Abraham Redwood and the Redwood Library, chartered in 1747 “for the promotion of knowledge and virtue.”

Salve Regina's Extensions Dance Company

Details: "Oh, what fun it is to ride”… Come enjoy some old-fashioned holiday fun at Blithewold’s winter wonderland on a horse-drawn carriage ride, perfect for a snuggle-up-in-warm-blankets romantic rendezvous or fun for the whole family. Our bow- and garland-festooned carriage, which holds up to 8 people, will take a trip down our wooded Lover’s Lane, then cross Blithewold’s Great Lawn. Families will be photographed in the sleigh before the ride begins. The photos could be used for holiday greeting cards or to frame and cherish for years to come! Allan Millora Photography will provide each family with a digital image to keep, or offer your choice of a selected photo package. 


Hot chocolate and cookies will be served in the Dining Room, where you will wait for your ride. Upon registration, you will be given your time slot for the approximately 15-minute ride.

Details: The Newport Restoration Foundation is honored to present Waterscapes: Islamic Architecture and Art from Doris Duke's Shangri La, on view in the second floor galleries at Rough Point from April 7 to November 6, 2016.

Two of Duke's greatest passions--her love of the water; and, her love of Islamic art and architecture--came together spectacularly at Shangri La, her exotic ocean front estate in Honolulu and the only home she built for herself from ground up beginning in the late 1930s.
