One of our favorite things about Autumn is that it's the perfect running weather. That's probably why this month is filled with local road races, from Newport's only marathon to the highly anticipated Pell Bridge Run to a festive jack o lantern 5k. No matter your fitness level (we gauge ours at certified coach potato), October's line-up of races has something for you.

NEWPORT MARATHON & HALF MARATHON

The only marathon and half-marathon in Newport, the Newport Marathon course is simply astounding: winding ocean-side roads, miles of waterfront views and sweeping vistas of the grand mansions along Bellevue Avenue. The race this year takes place on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at 7:30am. The race will utilize a USATF-certified course and can be used as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and all other major marathon events. Newport Marathon and Half Marathon has something for everyone. Choose between the Marathon: 26.2-mile running tour of Aquidneck Island, or the Half Marathon: the scenic first half of the marathon course featuring historic Downtown Newport, Fort Adams, Ocean Drive and the famous Bellevue Avenue mansions.

The marathon donates $50,000 to Ronald McDonald House, Aquidneck Land Trust, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Boys Town New England, the YMCA Newport and Clean Ocean Access to help improve local charitable organizations. More details.
