We cannot believe we're halfway through July. Hey summer, slow your roll! This week is jam-packed with exciting things to do. From the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open at the International Tennis Hall of Fame happening all week, to shark week celebrations featuring shark-themed food and drinks, plus the return of some of our weekly favorites, like Easton's Beach Music Night, Rose Mondays at the Grace Vanderbilt, and many more.

HALL OF FAME TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Details: Just after Wimbledon each year, top ATP World Tour pros head to Newport to compete in the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, the first stop of the summer swing for pro tennis in the United States. Contested on the historic grass tennis courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the tournament is the only event played on grass courts outside of Europe, and it offers the only opportunity to see professional men's tennis in the Northeast prior to the US Open.

LECTURE: THE WAVES, FROM POPES TO HARTFORDS

Details: The Waves was built in 1927 as the summer residence and studio of renowned classical architect John Russell Pope and his wife Sadie Jones Pope. The use of local materials at the sympathetic natural site set a standard for estate building in the 1920s ands 30s and would become the setting for casual and innovative entertaining. This is the second lecture in the three-part series "Newport Summers During the Interwar Years."

BUGS & SLUGS

Details: Everyone knows slugs leave a slimy trail, but did you know they use the chemicals in it to find their way home? Children will flip over rocks and dig in the dirt as they search for bugs and slugs then examine the creatures up close and learn more about their habits and habitats. The class is best suited for children 6 to 12 years old. Fee is $5 per student. Adults are free and encouraged to attend.

 
LECTURE: "AN AMERICAN SHIPWRIGHT IN NORSELAND"

When: 6:00 - 9:00 PM
Where: Herreshoff Marine Museum

Details: Matthew Barnes is a 2010 graduate from the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) and is currently a boat builder and lead shipwright for the Mystic Seaport overseeing the 30 month restoration of the Mayflower II (in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut.) In his lecture he will be discussing the traditional building methods used in the construction of a ship during the Viking Age. He will also be covering his findings of the Norse effect on wooden boat building in the North Atlantic and the World, which is still evident today over a 1000 years later.
