NEWPORT COUNTY APA GOLF TOURNAMENT

Admission: $150 per golfer
Details: Cost includes lunch, dinner banquet, 18 holes of golf and a cart. All proceeds benefit Newport County Special Olympics team and provides no cost sports, team uniforms, equipment and innovative adaptive programs for all athletes. Details: Vernal means spring and Ballard Park’s vernal pond is full of life this time of year. A Friends of Ballard Park educator will explain the unique aspects of vernal ponds and students will use nets and microscopes to take a closer look at what organisms are living in the water. The class is best suited for children 6 to 12 years old. Fee is $5 per student. Adults are free and encouraged to attend. Meet at 21 Hazard Road (quarry meadow entrance). Rain date is the following Monday.

SAVE THE BAY SWIM

Where: Newport Naval Base to Potters Cove, Jamestown
Admission: $50 for Swimmers; $25 for kayakers; free for spectators
Details: Founded in 1977, The Swim is Save The Bay’s largest annual fundraiser, serving as a critical support to our efforts to protect and restore the Narragansett Bay region. Every year, nearly 500 swimmers, ages 15 to 77 years, swim 1.7 nautical miles across the Bay to raise money and awareness. Swimmers come from more than 25 states to experience the iconic, open water trek from Newport to Jamestown. More than 1,500 spectators, vendors and supporters gather to cheer swimmers and celebrate their trek across the Bay. In many ways, the Save The Bay of today is the legacy of those first brave souls who crossed the East Passage 40 years ago. Back then, proceeds from The Swim kept the organization afloat.
