Our festive levels are maxed out this week as we near the end of October. From pumpkin patches and hayrides to pick-your-own orchards and a full roster of spooky events to get in the Halloween spirit, we're 100% ready to send October out in style. 

 

Head to Trinity Church for their annual pumpkin patch with a wide selection of homemade goodies, popcorn, cider and more. Can't get enough? Keep the pumpkin party going at Audubon in Bristol featuring fun pumpkin games, a silly fall photo booth with fun disguises, a pumpkin patch and more. 

 

Things get spooky towards the end of the week with haunted brewery tours at Newport Storm Brewery, the return of Halloween Carnevil at Newport Vineyards with circus performers, fortune teller machine and more, and Fortress of Nightmares in the underground tunnels of Fort Adams. RETURN TO CAMELOT TOUR

CRESCENT MOON HIKE

LECTURE: HOW TO TALK ABOUT RACE IN 2017

Details: The 2017 Fall Life of the Mind Salon Series continues on Wednesday, October 28 when Ray Rickman holds a conversation about race in 2017. Mr. Rickman will discuss how to talk about race with peers and people outside your own cultural group. Rickman is a former president of the American Civil Liberties Unionr and state representative from the College Hill area of Providence. He served as Rhode Island Deputy Secretary of State from 2000 to 2002. A wine and cheese reception will be held at 5:30 pm, followed by the salon at 6:00 pm. 

 

LECTURE: The Breakers Cultural Landscape Report

Details: The Preservation Society commissioned Reed Hildebrand Landscape Architects of Cambridge, MA in collaboration with Robinson & Associates Landscape Historians of Washington, DC to prepare a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for The Breakers. A CLR documents site history and existing conditions, provides an analysis of the landscape's integrity and significance, and outlines treatment recommendations for the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the property. Learn about the fascinating history of The Breakers landscape and the guidelines established in preparation for its upcoming rehabilitation.

HAUNTINGS OF LINDEN PLACE

Details: For three weeks in October a special docent-led tour will be offered on Thursday nights which covers the ghost stories associated with the DeWolf and Colt families and the eerie amusements of the nineteenth century. As you tour the 200-year-old mansion’s rooms by candlelight, you might discover that the dead have always been alive at Linden Place. Learn about the rumored hauntings of Colt Farm and Colt Memorial School, about vampires roaming the towns of Rhode Island in the 1800s, and mediums summoning the return of the lost. Discover the traditional mourning practices of families in Bristol by examining jewelry, dress, and photographs. Experiment with some of the “weird science” techniques practiced during the nineteenth-century. And finally, find out if any of Linden’s ghosts will be following you home.
