With warmer weather ahead, we're marking our calendars for our destination's upcoming road races. Whether you're a pro athlete or you're looking to dip your toes in the exercise world - this runner's roster has everything you need. Beginner, get your blood flowing with 4-miles across the Pell Bridge at a pace of your choosing. Seasoned runners, enjoy a scenic trail through Newport's winding coastline with expansive ocean views and the perfect sea breeze to keep you cool. Whichever you choose, the following runs are sure to awaken your inner athlete.



A 10 mile road race around Newport's historic Ocean Drive on Sunday, June 5. Starting and finishing in the walls of the Fort Adams Fortress this event will be one of the most unique road races in Rhode Island featuring stunning views from start to finish. Limited registration spots are now available. When you've completed the great feat of running 10 miles, head to the post-race recovery zone for Polar beverages, water, and Gatorade, plus bagels, fruit and coffee supplied by The Corner Bakery Café.  In the mood for something stronger? Harpoon will be offering all event participants of legal drinking age a post-race beer inside The Fort.

Norman Bird Sanctuary will host its 10th Annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 18.  A Father’s Day Weekend tradition for many, it's the perfect family activity, allowing participants to run, walk, or jog through scenic vistas of field, ridge and beach. USATF sanctioned. Kids can join the fun by registering for the Frosty Freez Kids Run. Head back to the sanctuary afterwards for music by DJ Butch, refreshments and awards.

The nationally acclaimed event series known for its celebration of local craft brewing, Craft Brew Races, is set to return to Newport on July 16, 2016. Recently named among The Best of Beer & Beverage Run byActive, the race features a 5k followed by a craft beer festival with unlimited samples from 20+ breweries, food and live music, and medals and awards for finishers. Plus, each participant receives a souvenir pint glass. 


The race, held at Fort Adams State Park, begins at 12pm followed by the festival from 12:30-4 pm. Featured food vendors include: Mission Newport, The ShuckIn Truck, Pour Judgement, Brick Alley Pub, Noreys, Kayem Artisan Sausage.

The only marathon and half-marathon in Newport, the Newport Marathon course is simply astounding: winding ocean-side roads, miles of waterfront views and sweeping vistas of the grand mansions along Bellevue Avenue. The race this year takes place on Sunday, October 9 at 7:30am. The race will utilize a USATF-certified course and can be used as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and all other major marathon events. Newport Marathon and Half Marathon has something for everyone. Choose between the Marathon: 26.2 mile running tour of Aquidneck Island, or the Half Marathon: the scenic first half of the marathon course featuring historic Downtown Newport, Fort Adams, Ocean Drive and the famous Bellevue Avenue mansions.


The marathon donates $50,000 to Ronald McDonald House, Aquidneck Land Trust, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Boys Town New England, the YMCA Newport and Clean Ocean Access to help improve local charitable organizations. Details.

Once a year, pedestrians and runners are allowed to cross the Pell Bridge on foot during the Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run returning this year on October 23, 2016. Open to both runners and walkers, the run is four-mile excursion from Jamestown to Newport produced by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. One hundred percent of proceeds go to support local not-for-profits organizations while promoting a healthy, active lifestyle.

Entry fees include shuttle transportation, an official event shirt and finish line food and beverage. Although additional charitable fundraising is appreciated, no additional fundraising is required to participate in the run/walk. More details.
