But when you add nearly 400 years of cozy, historic charm, cobblestone streets lined with twinkling white lights, Gilded Age mansions bedecked with 30 Christmas trees and thousands of poinsettias, and small, toasty shops with candlelit windows, magical becomes truly enchanting.


The holiday season officially kicks off November 18 with the return of Christmas at the Newport Mansions followed by a robust roster of festive happenings, from Christmas tree lightings and holiday strolls to visits with Santa and mesmerizing performances.

Details: Each room in Blithewold Mansion, along with 32 acres of award winning gardens, transforms into an elaborate display of glimmering holiday finery for the season. Details.

Featured events include:
  • Starlit Strolls: Enjoy an illuminated stroll along the winding paths of Blithewold’s enclosed garden followed by a scavenger hunt with the opportunity to take a closer look at the handcrafted lanterns and ornaments that light your way.
  • Children's Holiday Story Time: Children’s librarians from Rogers Free Library will present classic holiday stories. Enjoy a cookie and a 1920's-inspired children’s craft following the story.
  • Sparkle! An Outdoor Family Event: Take in the beautifully illuminated gardens and decorated mansion with free hot cocoa, s'mores kits, carol singing and more. 
  • Sing-Along with Santa: Sing along to your favorite songs of the season, followed by a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” from Santa. Once the show has ended, enjoy cookies and hot cocoa.

Holiday Lantern Tour

The Newport Nutcracker

Details: The 16th season of the Newport Nutcracker presented by Island Moving Company returns to Rosecliff. Follow the young protagonist through the mansion as she celebrates the holiday season with her family, battles with the Mouse King, dances with the Snow Queen and travels with her beloved Nutcracker to the magical Land of Sweets. The first act is an experiential journey as guests are guided from room to room of the historic mansion. For the second act, guests will be seated at tables in the ballroom.

Dickens Christmas Dinner Train

Admission: This interactive retelling of the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” by the Marley Bridges Theatre Company is an evening of music, laughter, food, and spirits certain to cure even the worst “Scrooge.” Join Ebenezer himself, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and all the Christmas Spirits on a dinner journey along the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad. Annual Bowen's Wharf Christmas Tree Lighting

Details: Thousands of sparkling lights will illuminate the tree at historic Bowen's Wharf during as the towering evergreen tree is lit for the first time. Enjoy caroling along with a visit from Frosty the Snowman, Santa and Mrs. Claus at ‘The North Pole’. Restaurants & shops are open before and after the event. Some businesses will offer free refreshments, early afternoon caroling, and shopping specials. .

  • 4:30 PM: Meet with Frosty the Snowman
  • 5:00 PM: The Christmas Carol Sing-a-long
  • 6:00 PM: the Mayor lights the tree, immediately followed by Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving by boat (weather permitting).


Undecked Halls at Doris Duke's Rough Point

Details: Enjoy an authentic view inside Heiress Doris Duke's untouched mansion during the holiday season. Duke spent Christmas in sunny Hawaii far away from Rough Point. Experience her quiet house as she left it, see the decorated staff wing, and hear about her tropical holiday. Learn how Rough Point's winter caretaking traditions have remained the same for the past half century. Tour the first floor and enjoy refreshments in the staff dining room, not normally open to the public.
