Arts and Culture Newport, RI

Newport has long been associated with great film. More than two dozen movies have been shot here (“High Society” 1956, starring luminaries Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra; The Great Gatsby 1974, starring Mia Farrow and Robert Redford; Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated Amistad starring Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins and Matthew McConaughey to name a few) and film has long been a part of the very fabric of our arts and cultural scene.

Film experiences here include a dedicated tour featuring the many locations famous movie scenes have been shot, newportFILM screenings which feature meaningful documentaries in extraordinary settings:  turn of the century theaters, under the stars at the edge of Newport Harbor, on the manicured rolling green lawns of mansions, historic town squares, farms and polo fields (is there anything better than a glass of fine wine\ paired with cheese and a warm summer breeze while watching a great flick?).

The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center, built in 1834, also creates exciting movie experience, like showing live and encore screenings from the La Scala Opera House in Milan, the National Theatre in London, Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet in London, the Globe Theatre in London, The Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and the Roundabout Theatre in NYC.
