May 28 in National Burger Day. And while this little coastal haven of ours is known for award-winning seafood, you better believe we know our way around a good burger. Hello, Newport Burger Bender. Below are our top picks for the best burgers around to help celebrate the day.
Renowned as the best burger in Rhode Island by Thrillist and TripAdvisor (and pretty much the largest group of die hard fans around), Mission burgers have been stealing hearts and appetites since the establishment first opened doors back in 2013. The burger: served with lettuce, raw onion and mission sauce sure to change your life: aioli with ketchup, cornichons, capers, fines herbes and brandy.
Pro tip: Add caramelized onions and don't skip the fries, they're said to be the best around.
There is a reason Chomp in Warren is considered the Bristol County Burger Authority. It probably has something to do with the fact that they pile their burgers high with excessively enticing and distinctly creative toppings like fried jalapeno chips, mac and cheese and crispy wontons. That being said, what would National Hamburger Day be without a towering challenge? The Stack (appropriately named) includes a beef burger, house bacon, American cheese, Mozambique fried chicken, melted onions and tomato jam, Swiss cheese, Chomp sauce, smokey beef & pork burger, pickled jalapenos, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles -- all on one sandwich. Need we say more?
POUR JUDGEMENT BURGER
We've heard people describe this burger as the best they've ever had. We aren't going to argue. It's not fancy: served with your choice of cheese and whichever additional topping you choose to add, but it is seasoned flawlessly and cooked to perfection.
THE CROWLEY BURGER
As two-time Newport Burger Bender winners, you could say La Forge knows their way around a burger. The Crowley Burger, winner of the 2018 competition, is created with a beef patty topped with cremini mushrooms, gruyere cheese, baby arugula and truffle oil.
BACON ONION JAM BURGER
Winner of Newport Burger Bender 2017, this natural ground beef burger is topped with dijon, bacon onion jam, cheddar cheese and house made special sauce - a recipe we're still trying to get our hands on.
M.O.A.B (MOTHER OF ALL BURGERS)
You didn't think we'd let you get through National Burger Day without sending you to this local burger bar, did you? Two of your favorite things (burgers + beer) come together at Harry’s Bar & Burger. Their mini burgers are crafted with 100% pure Hereford beef and paired with a large variety of craft beers, including “Das Boots,” a 68 oz. beer boot. Opt for the M.O.A.B. topped with Harry's classic cheese, hickory smoked bacon, portabello mushrooms and fried onion strings.
